Tackling biodiversity loss in the poultry sector by zootechnical enhancement of autochtonous poultry breeds
The BRAvi project

Genetic variability of breeds is indispensable to guarantee the diversification of products and the development of production systems. In the poultry sector, productive breeding is exclusively based on commercial hybrids, which were selected through a process that has led to a 90% loss in the allelic heritage of autochtonous breeds. On the other hand, Italian chicken and turkey breeds, excluded from production industry, still possess an important biodiversity heritage. Preventing further contraction of their populations’ numbers is therefore a pressing need. To oppose to this trend, which has been lasting for decades, the BRAvi project, funded in 2025-2026 by the Lombardia regional Complemento per lo sviluppo rurale of the 2023-27 CAP Strategic Plan, aims at performing a rich informative activity to promote Italian poultry breeding across the territory. Reaching small rural productive companies is in fact indispensable to counteract the constant loss in poultry biodiversity.

Target
The BRAvi project is addressed to a varied target, to connect with a dinamic bond the biological value of biodiversity, the economic value of products, and the ecological value of the integrated productive system: both breeders and operators of the food industry (from small scale productions) and of tourism will take advantage of the results obtained by the project.
Objectives
- Spreading knowledge on national conservation activities and on the properties of local genetic resources which are available in the poultry sector.
- Identifying efficient communication strategies to promote breeding of local poultry breeds and increase the value of their products.
- Promoting productive breeding of autochtonous breeds, through informative events for breeders and farmers from the territory.
Funding
Received funding (total public expense): 39.716,67 € (16.164,68 € from European Union co-funding, 16.486,39 € from national co-funding, and 7.065,60 € from regional co-funding).
